Gregory “Greg” Paul Linsmeyer, a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at the age of 68, surrounded by his loving family.
Greg was born in Elwood on December 28, 1954, to the late Louis and Jane “Anne” (Wunder) Linsmeyer. On June 22, 1974, he married his high school sweetheart, Le’Ann (Stokes) Linsmeyer and they shared 49 years of marriage together.
Greg grew up in Elwood and always enjoyed spending time with his friends and brothers. Growing up Greg and his brothers, Gary and Tim, worked a paper route that got passed down between the boys for nearly 10 years. He attended St Joseph Catholic School, where he served as an altar boy and occasionally snuck up into the bell tower with mischievous friends. He played in CYO sports and received a trophy as one of the highest scorers for the season on his 5th/6th-grade basketball team.
reg attended high school at Wendell L. Willkie High School where he graduated with the class of 1973. His 1970 Dodge Challenger (blue with a white vinyl top and white leather interior) earned him a spot in the “Willkie Wheels” column of the Megaphone, the WWHS newspaper. After high school, Greg took several courses to pursue a profession in banking. Greg worked at Star Financial Bank in Elwood for over 30 years. The relationships he formed with coworkers and clients were a source of great pride. After retirement, Greg was a medical transport driver for Riverview Hospital, work he found very rewarding. He especially loved transporting a young boy with special needs, Greg pointing out animals and scenery for him to enjoy.
reg was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Greg served as a board member for several years for the Elwood Chamber of Commerce, Visiting Nurse Association, and Elwood Country Club as well as participating in several banking industry associations. He was also a longtime member of the Elwood Elks and Elwood Country Club. Greg loved his time on the golf course with family and friends playing in tournaments, leagues, and casual games throughout each season. He also spent leisure time participating in bowling leagues, fishing, and following regional racing circuits in his younger years.
Greg cherished the time he spent with his family and close friends on their annual trip to Holden Beach, North Carolina. When at home he liked to grill out and always enjoyed a good campfire. In his later years, it was his five grandchildren who stole his heart. Greg attended all their music and sports activities, and he loved to travel to Virginia to see Wyatt and Lily.
