BUREL TYNER

Burel Otto Tyner Jr., age 88, of Elwood, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Edgewater Woods Nursing Home in Anderson.

Burel was born in Elwood, IN, on June 26, 1935, to the late Burel and Waneda (Persley) Tyner.  In August 1992 he married Linda Hirschy-Tyner, and they shared almost 20 years of marriage together before Linda’s passing in 2012.

Burel was a lifelong Elwood resident and was in the graduating class of 1953 from Windell L. Wilkie High School.  He then served his country for four years in the United States Navy.  Burel returned home to work at Continental Can where he retired from in 1987.  After retirement, Burel also worked for the BMV for 13 years until the year 2000. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was heavily involved with the Knights of Columbus, RCIA as an instructor, and sitting on several committees throughout the years.  Burel was a member of the Elwood Elks, a founding member of the Tea Party of Madison County, and he was also a longtime volunteer at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital.  When he had the chance, he loved to golf, fish, and do woodworking in his garage.  On Saturday you could find him rooting on his favorite College Football team, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame!  His family held a special place in Burel’s heart, and he loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren.

Burel is survived by his two sons, Sam (Caterina) Tyner of Elwood, and Brett (Jacquie) Tyner of Anderson, daughter, Christi Tyner of Elwood, step-daughter, Darlene (Roy) Zeitvogel of Decatur, IN, special daughter Ana Jenkins of Phoenix AZ, brother, Arlis (Becky) Tyner of Elwood, half-sister, Diane Geddis of CA, half-brother’s, Dane and Terry Tyner both of Marion, IN, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Burel was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Hirschy-Tyner, parents, Burel Tyner Sr. & Waneda Toothaker, daughter, Anna Marie Tyner, grandson, Shane Tyner, sister, Myrna Pinnell, and brothers, Larry and Bill Tyner.

Visitation for Burel will be Sunday, August 13, 2023, 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1306 South A St, Elwood, Indiana.

The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am Monday, August 14, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elwood, Indiana with Fr. Dennis Goth officiating.

Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, in Elwood, Indiana.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Building Fund.
