Local Poets help others and have songs nominated

ANDERSON — Poets Abby and Hanna Wilson, 15, have donated money through the streaming royalties of their poem “Little 500 Race” and songs they co-wrote with their aunt Nicole called ‘You’re Someone Special To Me” and “Settin Myself On Fire”, and “Anderson Speedway,” a song they co-wrote with their special friend Steve Wallace.

Change in law allowing minors in restaurant bar areas still carries restrictions

INDIANAPOLIS — A longstanding Indiana law underwent changes beginning July 1 in an effort to expand family dining space in Hoosier restaurants. The law previously prohibited minors under 18 years of age from dining in the bar area of a restaurant. But beginning last Saturday families will be able to dine with their minor children under age 18 in a bar area – but for the sole purpose of consuming food.

ARRESTS Mitchell Edward Preston Jr., 52, of Frankton, was arrested Tuesday, June 27 for obstruction of justice, resisting law enforcement, and a 10-day hold for violation of probation. Caleb Dane Glotzbach, 28, of Alexandria, was arrested Tuesday, June 27 for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Summer cookouts to cost Indiana shoppers 8% more this summer

INDIANAPOLIS — Hoosiers can’t seem to escape rising food prices. Indiana Farm Bureau’s annual summer cookout market basket, featuring some of America’s summertime staples, revealed Hoosiers are paying an average of $69.47 for a cookout feeding 10 people this summer, or $6.95 per person – an 8% increase compared to last year. That’s similar to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Price Outlook for grocery store food purchases, which increased 5.8% this past May compared to this time last year.

The Elwood Elks will host the first annual Noah Shahnavaz Legacy Scholarship fundraiser on Saturday, July 8 from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets are $15 pre-sale or $20 at the door. 2nd Chance and The Bigger is Better Band will perform live music. All proceeds will go to the Noah Shahnavaz Legacy Scholarship Fund.

Suspect in officer-involved shooting facing additional charges

The man accused of pointing what officers believed to be a firearm at Elwood police officers on June 9 is facing additional charges. According to a probable cause affidavit, Assistant Chief Kyle Comer was notified that Dakota McCreary, 26, was being released form the hospital after being treated for a gunshot wound.

Edgar L. “Eddie” Etchison, age 80 of Alexandria, died Saturday July 1, 2023 at Community Hospital in Anderson. Arrangements are pending at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home and will be updated in the Elwood Call-Leader and copherfeslermay.com.

JANE VANCLEAVE

1928-2023 VANCLEAVE: Ella Jane Vancleave died peacefully, 06-30-2023, aged 94, in St. Petersburg FL, where she had lived since 2018. She formerly lived in Sarasota FL 1985-2018; Lima OH 1975-1985; Elwood IN 1956-1975; Detroit MI 1949-1956; and Huntingdon TN where she was raised. She was preceded in death two years ago by Maurice, her husband of 72 years; and parents Rupert and Bessie Mai (Walters) Webb. She is survived by sons Dale (Christine), Ted, and Gary (Karen); grandsons Mark (Susan), and Luke; and other relatives. She was much loved and will be greatly missed. JAMES MARTIN

Jim Martin, 73, of Gas City, passed away Friday June 23, 2023, at home surrounded by those who loved him. He was born in Elwood, Indiana, on February 22, 1950, to Lester and Mona Ruth (Baker) Martin. On March 19, 2016, he married Marcia (Rowan) Martin, whom he loved dearly and survives. James graduated from Southwood High School and, after graduating, worked 32 years with Chrysler Corporation. Following retirement, he spent his time doing the things he loved--spending time with his wife and family. His favorite hobbies were golf and playing pool.
