Cultivating a Sense of Purpose

The Cornell University psychologist Anthony Burrow has spent most of his career researching how cultivating a sense of purpose in life can improve our lives in a variety of ways, making us happier, healthier, wealthier, and even more attractive to others. Those who lack purpose often have a sense of despair about their lives, feeling that their lives lack meaning. Those who have a sense of purpose, on the other hand, feel that their lives are meaningful and worth living. Having a sense of purpose is more than just reaching a series of disparate goals, but rather is about having your goals ordered by some larger purpose that governs our lives. Reaching a goal may make us temporarily happy, but if that goal isn’t part of a larger purpose we soon find ourselves drifting aimlessly. A crucial aspect of purpose in life is that it is internally driven; it has to come from within and be something that one gives to oneself. A lack of purpose can afflict us at all stages of our lives. Adolescents, parents, and people in the prime of life or in the final years of life can all struggle to find purpose in life. Burrow’s research suggests that we don’t discover our purpose in life but rather create it. Do you feel your life has a sense of direction? Are the daily activities of your life engaging? The answer to these questions is obviously subjective; whether you have a sense of purpose is up to you and how you feel about your life. “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” – Victor Frankl – Christopher Simon

EJSHS Class of 2023

The Elwood High School was organized in 1888 by Mr. Herman F. Willkie, Superintendent of Elwood schools. At first there was a two-year; in 1893 the course was lengthened to three years, and in 1897 a four-year course was outlined. In the fall of 1890, Mr. T.J. Fitzgibbon succeeded Mr. Willkie as the sole instructor for the 42 high school students. By the fall of 1891, the enrollment had increased to 55, and Mr. Charles Meeks was appointed principal to assist Superintendent Fitzgibbon. Mr. Willkie applied for a commission in the winter of 1889-90, but this was not granted until the request was made again by Mr. Fitzgibbon. The State Board of Education sent Mr. L.H. Jones, Superintendent of Indianapolis schools to inspect the Elwood High School; as a result of his recommendation, Elwood secured a commission in 1892.

Plain Vanilla

A few weeks ago, I was entertained by a character reenactor who portrayed Daniel Boone. This reminded me of an episode that occurred during our peripatetic wanderings around America.

Social Security Matters

Dear Rusty: Hypothetically, if I plan to sign up for Social Security at 70 and pass away before that, I will get nothing. My spouse would still get a boost in the amount she receives because I made more, but everything I put into the program vanishes.

Slices of Life

I’ve heard of grief compared to losing a limb, and think that’s quite accurate. After a tremendous loss, you are never really the same again.
