Plain Vanilla

Over the course of my two years in junior high school, specifically to the times, grades seven and eight, we studied a good bit about our country, its history and its government. This was clearly long before the days in which children who know virtually nothing about our nation were granted the 'right' to vote in our local, state and national elections.

Election Board hires legal representation

The Madison County Election Board on Tuesday approved the hiring of the Ritchison Law Office to represent the board, if needed, for a complaint filed by Ricky Payne, of Elwood. Payne was removed from the Republican ballot as a candidate for Elwood mayor.

New state nature preserve dedicated in Adams and Jay counties

The Natural Resources Commission (NRC) approved the dedication of Limberlost Swamp Nature Preserve, which is located across Adams and Jay counties during its regularly scheduled bimonthly meeting at Fort Harrison State Park today.

The Lafayette Midwest Toy Soldier Show

The Lafayette Midwest Toy Soldier Show will be held on Sunday, March 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the courtyard by Marriott Conference Center, 150 Fairington Avenue in Lafayette. This is just off I65 north of Indianapolis (exit 72). It is presented by the Midwest Toy Group.

A rare bongo

The Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, MI described the bongo as 'one of the most majestic and endangered members of the antelope family' in its announcement of the rare, recent birth of a female eastern bongo calf. How rare are bongos? According to the zoo, only about 100 eastern bongos remain in the wild and about 300 bongos are protected in accredited zoos; 'their ornate horns and vibrant orange coat make them a target for hunting and poaching.'

ELWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY:

The Elwood Library invites students to join the Indianapolis Children's Mueseum virtually from the library today, Wednesday March 22, from 4 to 5 p.m. Students will hear a forensics expert describe their work, then explore a virtual crime scene. Following this, students will use tools to practice collecting evidence from their own mock crime scenes. This program is for students in grades 3rd-5th. Registration is REQUIRED and space is limited so please call the library at 765-552-5001 to sign-up!

A rare catch

Fishing guides Dylan Wier and Blaine Kenny knew that the fish they had hooked on Orange Beach, Alabama on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico was a big one. They thought they might have a tiger shark on their hook.
