Sallee powers Panthers past Jets

Elwood Call-Leader ANDERSON –– There's no mystery that when trying to deal with the Elwood Panthers, there must be a plan in place to defend seniors Hunter Sallee and Jayden Reese. During Wednesday's game against Anderson Preparatory Academy, the Jets found no answer for Sallee and even though foul trouble limited Reese's playing time, the rest of the team made up for it in a big way.

Bulldogs rally to beat Elwood

Elwood got off to a strong start in Tuesday’s varsity boys basketball game against Clinton Central. But it was the Bulldogs who put together a strong finish to leave John Ward Gymnasium with a 58-52 victory over the Panthers.

Eagles get senior night victory over Knighstown

Elwood Call-Leader FRANKTON –– Frankton has been a hot basketball team, winning five of its last six games and three in a row. Senior night was no exception as those three upperclassmen and the rest of the team made sure the night was memorable with a 64-44 victory over Knightstown here Tuesday night.

The Frankton-Lapel Community School Corporation Board of Trustees will meet March 9 at 6 p.m. in a public session at 7916 West 300 North, Anderson, Ind. to discuss and hear objections and support regarding the proposed renovation and improvements to school facilities, including site improvements and the purchase of equipment and technology. The public is invited to attend and participate in the public hearing.

IDOH announces additional grants to help improve Hoosier health outcomes

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Health has awarded an additional $1 million in grants to eight organizations working to improve Hoosiers’ health as part of the Health Issues and Challenges program, which was established by the Indiana General Assembly in 2021 with funding from the American Rescue Plan Act. This is the third round of grants through the program and brings the total awarded since June to nearly $45 million.

Some hidden costs of DIY and renovating

The home renovation industry is booming, and that's reflected in the cost to upgrade a home. Home Guide says remodeling a kitchen costs $25,000 on average, and a bathroom renovation runs around $10,000. Though rates fluctuate depending on a host of variables, renovations can cost $15 to $60 per square foot depending on the project.

How labor shortages are affecting agriculture

The agricultural workforce is shrinking, and has been for some time. The American Farm Bureau Federation estimates there are roughly 2.4 million farm jobs that need to be filled annually, but there has been a drastic decline in workers each year. There are a number of reasons for the shortages. The AFBF says more than 73 percent of farm workers are immigrants from South America and Mexico. While the United States' H2-A visa program, which allows employers who meet specific requirements to bring foreign laborers in for temporary work, has increased the number of accepted applications for immigrants to 250,000, this number is still just a drop in the bucket in terms of labor needs.

Demolition at 1525 South 25th Street is underway. The demolition, which began earlier this week, is the fourth demolition of the 2023 season. 'This property sits in a very nice neighborhood of well-kept properties,' said Mayor Todd Jones. 'I can't say enough how much I appreciate the hard work of Lisa Hobbs, Amy Noone, and the Elwood Street Department as we continue to improve neighborhoods and stabilize property values by removing derelict properties.' Jones went on to say that he is proud of the city's momentum in eradicating blight.
