‘Flopping’ to be point of emphasis in H.S. basketball

Delay of game and flopping are the two major rule changes and points of emphasis for high school girls and boys basketball this winter.Wrestling and swimming have not had any major rule changes for the 2024-25 season at this time.

Owen Hinchman awarded Noah Shahnavaz Legacy Scholarship

Owen Hinchman, a 2024 Elwood Junior-Senior High School graduate and class president, was awarded the Noah Shahnavaz Legacy Scholarship at the second annual fundraising event held at the Elwood Elks Lodge.The scholarship, which assists a Madison County student seeking a career in law enforcement, is in the amount of $3,939.39 in honor of Noah Shahnavaz’s badge number.July 31 will mark two years since Shahnavaz, a 24-year-old Elwood officer, was killed in the line of duty.

Alexandria’s abandoned infant continues work; attends blessing of East Madison Fire Territory Safe Haven Baby Box

In the June 19, 1956 edition of the Alexandria Times-Tribune, a headline reads: Mother of abandoned infant found in Alex; medics say baby will survive.”Sixty-eight years later, the subject of that headline, Barb (BJ) Hamblin-Mahoney continues to actively work with agencies across the state to provide a safe option for mothers of newborn infants to surrender a child anonymously without requiring face-to-face interaction.Last week, Mahoney joined Mariah Betz of Safe Haven Baby Box, Molly Grollimund of He Knows Your Name, Union Township Trustee Tim Dunham, Chesterfield Clerk-Treasurer Deborah Dunham, Jamey Burrows, Chief of East Madison Fire Territory, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and community members to bless the 130th Safe Haven Baby Box installed and operational in Indiana, the 236th in the nation.Deborah Dunham told those in attendance that the installation of the Safe Haven Baby Box was made possible through the receipt of a Newborn Safety grant and the support of the community.
