Lack of big hit, errors sink Eagles vs Lapel

LAPEL — Frankton softball had just one hit with a runner in scoring position and it didn’t produce a run in Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Lapel in the first round of the Madison County tournament.That lack of key hitting and an undependable defense accounted for the loss and spoiled the tremendous pitching performance by Paige Parker, who allowed only three hits and no earned runs.“We just didn’t get the big hit,” said Eagles coach Jeremy Parker.

Madison-Grant defeats Elwood 9-1 in softball

FAIRMOUNT — Elwood’s bats came alive a little bit in Saturday’s varsity softball game against host Madison-Grant, which the Argylls won 9-1.After recording just one total hit in their first two games, the Panthers managed to produce five hits off a pair of M-G pitchers.

FRANKTON — Coach Jeremy Parker’s Frankton Eagles varsity softball team had a counter for every Shenandoah assault here Monday night, allowing the hosts to pull out a thrilling 7-6 victory over the Raiders.Shenandoah took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning taking advantage of two one-out singles, an RBI groundout by Gabrielle Patrick and an RBI single by Tarran Mills.But the Eagles answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Elwood, Frankton baseball off to rough starts

Frankton’s varsity baseball team finds itself 0-3 after the first week of the season, while Elwood’s baseball team opened the season on Monday with a loss at Eastern.The Eagles fell to Hagerstown 5-3 in it’s season opener on Monday, March 25.

FRANKTON — A seventh-inning rally fell short here on Monday as Frankton dropped its varsity baseball opener to Hagerstown 5-3.Each team scored a run in the third inning and the score was knotted 1-1 when Hagerstown came up to bat in the top of the sixth.

Carl Scott celebrates 100th birthday

Carl Scott, who is believed to be the oldest surviving World War II veteran in Madison County, celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by friends, family, and loved ones last Sunday at Elwood Golf Links.

Duck Creek Players to present “Radium Girls”

The Duck Creek Players will be back on stage this week at the Historic Elwood Opera House with their production of “Radium Girls”.The Radium Girls were female factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting radium dials – watch dials and hands with self-luminous paint.After being told that the paint was harmless, the women in each facility ingested deadly amounts of radium after being instructed to “point” their brushes on their lips in order to give them a fine tip; some also painted their fingernails, faces, and teeth with the glowing substance.
