Asking Eric

Dear Eric: I’m 81 years old and my husband is 84. We were comfortably retired until our 44-year-old daughter and 9-year-old granddaughter moved in with us a few weeks ago. Our daughter was evicted from her condo because her ex-husband stopped paying. (I don’t blame him.)

Dear Eric: My good friend has been with her boyfriend for more than 20 years. She finally moved into his house after her mom died a year and a half ago. They attend each other’s family events – weddings, funerals, birthdays, sports events, work parties – and he tells her he loves her.

Dear Eric: How do you recommend dealing with a friend who often offers assistance but never follows through? By the way, cognitive or memory issues do not impact any other situations, and the offer does appear to be genuine.

Dear Eric: I was diagnosed some years ago with Alzheimer’s. My husband of 45 or so years is wonderful but even he and many of my friends do not understand that I no longer have choices. I love to dance and watch movies, do jigsaw puzzles, word search puzzles and more.

Dear Eric: I’m on a condo board with a couple of men who seem very controlling and regularly impugn my honesty. This is extremely uncomfortable. I’m not sure how to respond. For example, we had a meeting and one of them said we never have discussed these topics at this kind of meeting. I’m the secretary. I said look at last year’s special meeting after the annual election. You will see that we had some old business, new business and an executive session after the election of officers.

Dear Eric: My sister and brother-in-law live a couple of hours away. My wife and I get along with them but are not close, and we try to make an effort to see them when we are nearby (a couple times a year). We have a pre-school-age child, while they do not have kids. They are kind and generous to our child when they see him and bring him gifts from their travels when they do see him.

Dear Eric: My kiddo is hardworking, makes friends everywhere and is working on her third advanced degree. She is also working full time and volunteers at a shelter and her professional organization. She owns her house. My problem is her husband. He is not good enough for her.
