The opening of the Mary Beth Dunnichay Aquatic Center will be delayed until May 31, Mayor Todd Jones announced Tuesday morning, citing unseasonably cold temperatures in the region.
“Our residents look forward to the start of pool season every year, and we were just as excited to open the gates,” said Mayor Jones. “However, recent cold weather has made it unsafe and impractical to open the pool as scheduled.”
In a press release, Jones said the pool was originally to open May 24, but current temperatures remain too low for safe swimming. Jones said in the release that the current forecasts predict continued chilly conditions over the coming days. As a result, city officials have determined that postponing the opening of the newly remodeled Mary Beth Dunnichay Aquatic Center is the most responsible decision for the comfort and the safety of pool-goers.
“We know this is disappointing, especially for families looking to kick off the summer, but we’re confident the weather will improve soon,” Mayor Jones added. “We look forward to welcoming everyone on May 31 for a great summer season.”
The pool was closed in 2020 during the pandemic, and has remained closed due to structural issues that resulted in leaks. In April of 2023, the Elwood Redevelopment Commission authorized the use of tax increment financing to fund the rehabilitation of the aquatic center. The new Mary Beth Dunnichay Aquatic Center will feature a splash pad, a wading area for kids, a water slide, and a designated area for lap swimming.
