Steele G. ‘Red’ Vest Jr., age 94, of Elwood, passed away suddenly on Monday, Feb. 13, 2023, at Edgewater Woods Nursing Home in Anderson.
He was born in Elwood on July 19,1928, to the late Steele and Doris (Warner) Vest.
At the age of 17, Red bravely served his country during World War II by enlisting in the United States Army. After returning from the war, Red went to work for General Motors and retired in 1981 after 31 years of service.
On March 20, 1955, he married the love of his life, Betty M. (Cornwell) Vest and she preceded him in death on July 25, 2021.
Red was a 50-year member of the Quincy Masonic Lodge in Elwood, a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite in Indianapolis, Elwood V.F.W, and Elwood American Legion.
He loved taking care of his home and large property. As a hobby, Red enjoyed working on clocks and loved to mow his yard. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather that will be greatly missed.
Red is survived by three daughters, Vickie Jarrell of Elwood, Betty Vest of Elwood and Judy Cabe of Chesterton; two grandchildren, Steele (wife Amy) Jarrell and Christine (husband Jade) Crawford; seven great-grandchildren, Waylon and Parker Jarrell, Kaelin, Caden and Cameron Crawford and McKenzie and Sydnee Cabe; two greatgreat- grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; special nephew, Johnny Paul Deckard, and close friend, Randy Robison.
In addition to his parents and wife, Red was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Jason and Jay Cabe; two brothers, Jim Vest and William ‘Bud’ Vest; two sisters, Ruth Deckard and Jane Braddick; two son-in-laws, Chet Jarrell and Terry Beeman; and his loyal pets, Buster and Buddy.
A visitation and funeral service, beginning with a Masonic Memorial Service, took place on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, at Dunnichay Funeral Home in Elwood with the Rev. Pam Gregory officiating.
Entombment was at the Elwood Cemetery Mausoleum with military funeral honors conducted by the United States Army and the Elwood V.F.W.
