LAKE PLACID, Fla. – Charles R. “Bob” Holland, age 97, of Lake Placid, Fla. and formerly of Elwood and Syracuse, passed away on Feb. 17, 2023, at Advent Hospital in Lake Placid after a long, well-lived life.
He was born Aug. 19, 1925, in Elwood, the son of James R. and Stella (Welborn) Holland.
Bob was a 1943 graduate of Frankton High School and attended Purdue University for two years. His college was interrupted by his enlistment in the U.S. Army during World War II.
During his service, he was stationed in Germany and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. Following Armistice, he continued his service working security for the Nuremberg Trials. His military service affected him significantly.
After leaving the Army, Bob married his soulmate, Miriam Tubbs, on Aug. 29, 1946, and they shared more than 72 years of marriage together before her passing in 2019.
Bob went to work for the Orestes Canning Company (now Red Gold, Inc.) and ultimately retired as vice-president of the business. He later joined with his brother, Dick, as a co-owner of Holland Insurance Services in Tipton where he and Miriam worked for more than 10 years.
After retirement, Bob and Miriam enjoyed living at their home on Lake Wawasee in Syracuse before moving to warmer weather in Lake Placid, Fla. in 1992.
Bob was formerly active in both the Elks Lodge and the Masonic Lodge.
He especially loved fishing every opportunity he had.
It is comforting to know that Bob and Miriam have been reunited together in Heaven.
Bob’s family legacy includes a daughter, Becky Beckley of Lake Placid, Fla.; son, James Holland; granddaughter, Kelly Campbell; several nieces and nephews including Janet Magee of Palm City, Fla., Jeff (Kathy) Holland of Missouri and Chris (Mary) Holland of Greenfield; and cousins, Sarah Belle Prichard Dye and Nancy Ellen Kamman.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Miriam Holland; granddaughter, Amanda Beckley; and four siblings, R.W. “Dick” Holland, James Holland, Jane Holland and Mary Elizabeth Holland.
A funeral service celebrating Bob’s life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Bill Johnston of Grace Community Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army and Elwood V.F.W. Honor Guard.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the funeral on Saturday at the funeral home.
