NANCY L. ABERNATHY

1955-2023

Nancy L. Abernathy, age 67 of Tipton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at The Waters in Tipton with her sister at her side following an extended illness. She was born on May 6, 1955 in Elwood, the daughter of Robert G. and Deloris Imogene (Moore) Abernathy. Nancy was a 1973 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School in the last class occupying the old high school building. She worked at First Farmer’s Bank and Trust in Tipton as the Head Teller for over 17 years, and truly enjoyed fellowship with her bank family and customers.

Nancy was a longtime, devoted member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Elwood and a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Elwood. She enjoyed traveling, going with friends and family on memorable vacations through the years, taking day trips, and especially liked Amish culture. Nancy was an avid Indiana University and Butler basketball fan who rarely missed watching a game. She was wellknown for her sense of humor which she kept right until the end of her life in the care facility. In recent years, Nancy absolutely adored spending time with her great-great nephew, Drake. Nancy reaffirmed her faith in the Lord on Palm Sunday surrounded by her family, and this gives them great peace about her passing. She has been welcomed into Heaven by her parents and many other family members.

Nancy’s family includes a sister, Sharon (Dan) Delph of Tipton; niece Danette Eller, nephew, Bob (Andrea) Delph, special “sister” cousins, Carol Hudson of Frankton, Janet Kilgore-Stover of Elwood, and Mary Ellen (Curt) Whitson of Elwood; additional cousins, Phil Ogden of Elwood, David (Barbara) Abernathy of Elwood, and Phil (Melissa) Abernathy of Muncie; 3 great nieces, 3 great nephews; a great-great nephew; and special friends, Raeanna Merritt, Ruth Gilman, Ramona Orbaugh, Candy Goens, and Jay Waggoner. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; and cousins, Cathy Ogden, Judy Gillam, Steve Abernathy, and Carol Naselroad.

A funeral service celebrating Nancy’s life will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, April 24, 2023, at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with family member, Dr. Clint Whitson, officiating. A burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 to 7 pm on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home and will include a Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Memorial at 6 pm.
